Essay / Biomass - 976
IntroductionEnergy is a valuable source for people around the world, and over time we have become very dependent on fossil fuels. Fossil fuels include coal, oil and natural gas. Even if these resources are abundant, they will not always be easily accessible. This is why we need to start looking for other renewable resources that can create more energy. Biomass is a very important renewable resource and has the potential to become our gateway to a cleaner future. What is biomass? According to Conserve Energy Future, biomass is the energy contained in plants and animals. This includes organic matter from plants, animals, and other waste from organic sources. The process of photosynthesis begins with chlorophyll in plants absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as well as water from the soil. This energy is then transferred to animals once the plant is eaten by them. Biomass is considered a renewable energy source because the carbon dioxide and water contained in plants and animals are released into the atmosphere when burned. Large amounts of biomass are also capable of regenerating themselves over the period in which they are used. According to UCSUSA, most scientists believe that a wide range of biomass resources are very useful because they will reduce overall carbon emissions along with many other benefits. Sources of biomass include: crops, manure, trees, and waste and residue. Sources of Biomass Crops, also known as energy crops, can be grown on farms in large quantities. Some may view crops as a waste of land, but energy crops can be grown in a way that does not displace or reduce food production. Energy crops can be grown on marginal lands, pastures, or...... middle of paper ......o consume more. To gather enough wood to power a nation full of vehicles or power plants, companies would have to clear large areas of forest. Clearing more forest area can also affect the ecosystem and destroy many plant and animal habitats.ConclusionAfter taking a closer look at biomass, it appears that this renewable resource could be very beneficial in the future. Biomass is being used in new and advanced ways to produce energy. This has inspired Canada and other parts of the world to improve the biomass energy industry. Today we rely heavily on fossil fuels. These sources will eventually run out and we will have to find an alternative. Although biomass presents some challenges, it remains an important renewable resource for America as it transitions to a clean energy future. If developed correctly, biomass can produce large amounts of bioenergy..
