The play Fences by August Wilson shows us many examples of relationships between fathers and sons. The play illustrates how fathers do not always have a strong bond with their sons. Fences reveals a variety of unsatisfactory relationships you may encounter with your father. The most important father-son relationships discussed in the play are between Troy and Cory, Troy and Lyons, and Troy and his father. All of these unsatisfying relationships show the reader how complex life can be, even for ordinary people. The characters Troy and Cory have a very interesting relationship. At the beginning of the text, they seem to have a neutral relationship, but deep down, it is much more complex and interesting. As Cory's father, you would think that Troy would love Cory and want him to do what's best for him, but whenever Troy speaks with or about Cory, he makes it seem like 'He doesn't even like Cory. For example, Troy says, “Like you?” I walk out of here every morning... I bust my butt... I put up with these crackers every day... because I like you? You're the biggest fool I've ever seen (38).” ...
