Some families prefer life in prison rather than capital punishment. These families would prefer that the money spent on putting someone to death be on them and ask them for help for the loss of their loved one. Losing a loved one is a traumatic event. The death penalty focuses more on the condemned than on the suffering families. Instead of spending millions of dollars on capital punishment, that money could be spent helping families and working on unsolved cases in which some families were never able to bring closure to the death of a loved one. Most families want the person who killed their loved one to suffer the same consequences: death. Sentencing a person to death is the only fair justice that our legal system can apply, because in some cases, life in prison would be less painful for a person than capital punishment; while in other cases, life imprisonment would be even more painful. The reason prison would be less painful is because the murderer could live a full life, just not in the real world. It's the easy way out. But some prisoners don't like certain types of criminals because, depending on the type of crime, if a person who killed another was sentenced to life in prison, prisoners would take "good" care of that person. This means that the person will wish they were dead rather than in prison because the other prisoners will cause the murderer so much pain. Pedophiles have the hardest time in prison. Usually, if their crime becomes known, they won't last long. For this reason, they are sometimes placed under protection. Richard Matt and David Sweat escaped from this prison, a feat no one has accomplished in the 170 years of this facility's existence. Breaking through concrete and steel walls, these two inmates, who lived in cells adjacent to each other, used power tools to do so. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said that the prison undergoes regular maintenance, so it is impossible for Matt and Sweat to obtain these tools (Yan, Holly 1). Since two convicted killers managed to escape from a maximum security prison in New York, other convicts in the country's prisons will think they can do the same.
