Essay / Discrimination Discussion Paper - 1531
In Yonkers, the community's Hispanic population is approximately thirty-five percent. There are eighteen percent of Spanish speakers in Yonkers who cannot speak English or read and write English. In the Yonkers Police Department, there are eighty-six percent white officers. The remaining fourteen percent is made up of five percent black officers, about eight percent Hispanic, and just over one percent Asian officers. To make the changes become a more diverse policing environment, Westchester County has sent representatives to travel throughout the county to churches and job fairs to encourage men and women to enforce the law. I believe that the more law enforcement agencies are filled with a diverse environment, the more Hispanics and Blacks will join the job because of the diversity of the job, not because of a predominantly white staff . Employing a diverse police workforce can be successful for law enforcement officials because they are able to overcome language barriers. Greater diversity within police departments can lead to having more officers capable of working with different types of people. I think it would be unfair to bar gays and lesbians from employment simply because of their interest in their own gender. Their social status should not be an issue or affect the different types of jobs they might get. As long as they are professional, as police officers should be to protect society, there should be no problem. The police subculture provides a basis on which police officers must act and behave. As a police officer, you must put aside your beliefs, values, and religion so that you can treat everyone fairly. As an officer, you must also respect and protect society in an orderly manner. An example of a negative subcultural action is an officer not making an arrest because of a person's religion or religion.
