Essay / The Trial of Lyle and Erik Menendez - 801
On August 20, 1989, two brothers committed an unspeakable crime; the murder of their parents. Obviously, we now know who committed it but at the time, Lyle and Erik Menendez were not suspected. Police arrived on scene and found Jose and Kitty Menendez dead, Kitty with multiple gunshot wounds and also bruises from the beating. It was Eric and Lyle who "discovered" the bodies and called the police, and that's the only reason this situation came to light. The Menendez boys grew up in a wealthy family. The family lived a very luxurious life. Kitty and Jose lived in Beverly Hills in a mansion and also owned a 14-acre home in Calabasas, California. They had everything one could want; lots of cars, lots of land, a huge and beautiful house, two loving sons and above all a lot of money. Money seemed to be the motive here, as just days after their parents' murder, Eric and Lyle continued to spend crazy amounts of money, buying everything they could find. It was on August 20, 1989 that the lives of José and Kitty ended. The couple went to see a movie and settled in to watch it all night and were sleeping when the shooting happened. Lyle and Eric were "out" for the evening, but we soon learned what their plan was for the night. The first shot fired hit José in the elbow, the second in the arm, and the third shot was fired from a shotgun, directly to the back of José's head. After the first shots, Ms. Menendez woke up. She tried to run away, but the gun went off and she was hit in the leg and arm. Falling to the ground in pain, Kitty attempted to get up and escape, but she was covered in blood and began to slip, only to be shot again. None of her shots were fatal enough, so she's in the middle of a paper... but "the jurors in this trial were deadlocked, unable to choose between verdicts of premeditated murder or self-defense. As another CNN source said. The verdict found Lyle and Erik Menendez guilty of first-degree murder. Lyle and Erik Menendez lived a very spoiled life, with just about everything they could ask for. Their parents had lots of money and lived in a dream house with lots of money saved. It seems money mattered more than keeping their family together, as their lives fell apart on that fateful August night. Works cited by CNN. Cable News Network, nd Web.
