  • Essay / Cheating in college is an acceptable thing to do

School is a place where students learn and acquire knowledge. This helps the student prepare for the future. School is a competitive environment in which students compete with each other to get a good GPA and high ranking in school so that they can get scholarships or be accepted into a good university. To achieve these goals, students must achieve high scores on tests and assignments in all of their classes. The best students spend hours of their free time studying course material and doing homework. However, not everyone is the same. Some students choose to cheat to get good grades. Whenever the word "cheating" is mentioned, people always assume that it is a negative act. But what exactly is cheating? According to the article "Cheating" by D'Arcy Lyness, PhD, the definition of cheating is "when a person misleads, deceives, or deliberately acts dishonestly." In other words, cheating in studies means that students cheat teachers. People believe that under any circumstances, academic cheating is an unacceptable act that should be avoided at all costs. Students who cheat will face many consequences. On the other hand, academic cheating can be very useful to students. Cheating has its positive sides if people think twice about it. Cheating in college is an acceptable act. People accuse students of being at fault because they want to get good grades without putting in any effort or they cheat because they feel like they cannot pass the exam (Lyness, 2013). It is wrong to blame students. Each student aims for good grades and therefore does everything possible to obtain them. It is true that the way students get their good grades can be a bit underhanded and inappropriate, but saying that students not putting in effort in the middle of their assignment are expected to do well in their GE classes to meet the standard. As a result, students fear that they will not be able to maintain their grades and therefore must cheat to meet the requirements to get into their major. People tend to blame students for being lazy and not taking school seriously. However, they do not understand the pressure students face. To conclude, cheating at school is not a bad thing. The majority say it's wrong to do it, but to some extent they should realize it and think about it. It's a way to learn and get good grades. If people look at cheating in a positive way, they will see that it is very helpful. Works Cited Lang, James M. "How College Courses Encourage Cheating." BostonGlobe.com. Np, August 4, 2013. Web.
