Management is not just about making decisions, monitoring employees, and directing others. The result of good management is satisfied customers, who provide better customer service. For new managers to be successful, they must have good communication, people skills and an ability to motivate others. The ability to effectively exercise these skills makes a big difference to a manager and to the overall success of the company. Businesses depend on managers to acquire the skills and knowledge needed to help their business excel. Knowledge managers must possess a penchant for technology and globalization. Effective management can improve a company's performance by contributing to employee and customer satisfaction, productivity, and development (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, & Wright, 2010). The first skill that managers must understand and practice is communication, because it is the foundation of everything. actions in the workplace and gives the supervisor or manager the opportunity to build relationships with the entire work group without alienating anyone in the work environment (Roper, 2005). As a manager, it is very important to be able to communicate effectively. As Robert Kent, former dean of Harvard Business School, said: “In business, communication is everything” (Blalock, 2005). The Wisconsin Business School Alumni Association recently reported that managers spend 75 to 80 percent of their time communicating (Blalock, 2005). Communication skills are essential to success in an organization. Successful managers communicate where their target audience understands (Froschheiser, 2010).
