  • Essay / Similarities between To Kill a Mocking Birds and the...

The Scottsboro trial and the Tom Robinson trial are almost identical in the forms of racism and prejudice demonstrated as well as in the trial itself and its outcome . Racism and bias are evident and a key factor in both cases, which took place during the same time period. Both trials are very common in terms of the time period, the era in which the trials took place, who was persecuted, and finally why they were persecuted in the first place. “All black people were liars, and still not to be trusted, that was an important part of all these leads” was the thinking at that time. The story of the Scottsboro boys is very similar to the case of Tom Robinson in the story To Kill a Mockingbird. In the Scottsboro trials, nine boys were charged with crimes against white women. Six of these boys were accused of raping the two girls and two of assaulting the two girls. It was Victoria who reported the six boys who had raped her. Tom Robinson was also accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a white girl. Just like in the case of Tom Robinson, this town is just as racist as Maycomb. More than a hundred men stood outside the prison, hoping to have a good time beating and killing the men, which can be compared to the few men who stood outside the prison in Maycomb. Harper Lee directed To Kill a Mockingbird, an autobiography using her childhood trial, The Scottsboro Trial, with the novel's trial, The Tom Robinson Trial..
