Essay / What are the factors that most determine success? - 958
When it comes to the topic of success, most of us would readily agree that there are different ways to define success. As this deal usually ends, the question arises as to which factors most determine success. While some believe the Triple Package is essential, others argue that many factors determine success. Malcolm Gladwell cites many examples of what can lead to success. Some of these factors are culture, luck and practice. Another view is found in his book “Outliers,” Gladwell writes: “When outliers become outliers, it is not because of their own efforts. This is due to the contributions of many different people and many different circumstances, meaning that we as a society have more control over who succeeds – and how many of us succeed – than we do. let's not think so. (p. 7-8; Reading Group Guide) is what makes up long-term success. I personally believe that success is due to culture, luck and hard work. In their recent work, Amy Chua and Jed Rubenfeld have offered harsh critiques of the factors they believe are necessary for success. In their article “What Drives Success?” » Chua and Rubenfeld tell their readers that they believe “the triple package” is a necessary condition for a person to succeed. The triple package includes superiority complex, insecurity and impulse control. They explain this further by saying that the superiority complex is "a deeply held belief in one's exceptionality." The second seems to be the opposite: insecurity, the feeling that you or what you have done is not good enough. The third is impulse control – the ability to resist temptation. (p. 3; What Drives Success?) Chua and Rubenfeld state: "In isolation, each of these three qualities...... middle of paper ....... In the chapter "The 10,000 hour rule” he tells how the Beatles became exceptional musicians. The reason behind this is all the time they spend practicing. “Practice is not the thing you do once you get good at it. It's what you do that makes you good. (p. 42) He repeatedly mentions “the 10,000 hour rule,” saying it is the key to success. In conclusion, in comparing and contrasting my ideas about success with Malcolm Gladwell, Amy Chua, and Jed Rubenfeld's idea of success, I have discovered that there are more similarities than differences. Therefore, success can be determined by many different factors, it all depends on individual efforts to achieve it. Works Cited Gladwell, Malcolm. Outliers: The Success Story.
