  • Essay / What is the role of deafness in 'El Deafo' - 1041

However, even if we are not deaf, being in ASLN 201, we can relate to the book. Just as Cece comes to terms with her deafness, we are also learning a new language. Although we do this by choice, Cece has no say in the matter; his deafness is beyond his control. Yet she can control her behavior in relation to other people who come into contact with her deafness. From the book we can infer that being deaf can often be seen as a handicap. Until others have been exposed to this deaf person, really get to know them, and learn about deaf culture, they will quickly realize that it is not a disability at all . Deafness is a superpower. This is a superpower for all deaf people because it is what makes them unique. We would definitely recommend this book, not only is it fun and educational, but everyone who reads El Deafo will learn a valuable lesson about open-mindedness and self-respect. Cece finds herself in superheroes to overcome her difficulties. Cece was able to use superheroes to solve her problems and now she's a superhero herself. The most valuable point of the story is that everyone should have confidence in themselves and no matter what others think, you are special and unique. Overall, after reading El Deafo, we came to appreciate deafness and deaf culture much more. It's definitely worth it
