Essay / Public Shaming - 882
With the increasing costs of incarceration, new alternatives are emerging, one of the most popular being public humiliation. Public humiliation should not be considered appropriate for any offense that could result in a short prison sentence. Public shaming can cause so much emotional damage to someone, and no one should feel such incredible humiliation or self-hatred. People who experience public humiliation sometimes can't bear to live with themselves because it might lead them to do something irrational. Sometimes public humiliation is not even a punishment for some: if someone commits a crime, they should also serve their sentence. Public shaming can have serious consequences if inflicted on the wrong person and if inflicted on others it is just a slap on the wrist. Crimes must be taken seriously, as must sanctions. People should go to prison or do community service based on what they have done, they should not be released so easily. The justice system seems to think that by using public humiliation, a criminal will not commit the crime again. In some cases this may work, but in other cases the criminal will continue to commit crimes. Public shaming will not solve any of the societal problems that create crime and will not reduce crime rates. Criminals will not stop committing crimes because they are shameful in the public eye. In fact, criminals who are publicly shamed will likely commit more crimes now that they are labeled as criminals. This is how society works today: people are labeled for what they have done. No matter how hard one tries to become a better person or what one does to redeem themselves, they will always be what society calls them to be. So if a person were labeled a criminal, they would only commit more crimes, because that is what society expects of their... middle of paper ... service related to the crime they committed. She gives examples such as a drunk driver ordered to help in road accidents to make them see what is really happening without them being aware. This is a much harsher and more reasonable punishment because people will actually learn from their wrongdoings. Volunteering can help the person improve and put them on the right path. Public shaming is more than just a punishment for people, they either don't learn from it or they hate themselves for doing so. This should in no way be considered appropriate. A crime is a crime, no matter how big or small, people should serve time for what they did. They should not be made public and ridiculed. They should be placed somewhere where they can learn from their mistakes and get the help they need to improve as a human being..
