When she kidnaps one of Okonkwo's daughters, he is completely powerless to stop her. In fact, when his panicked wife makes a move to interfere with the kidnapping, Okonkwo is ready to kill her with his machete. Based on this example, it can be argued that Chielo displays mystical behavior to escape the brutal control of the men in his village. By declaring that she is carrying out the will of her god, the village designates her as having divine qualities and she elevates herself beyond the reach of the other villagers. By escaping the control of others while acting like a witch, Chielo further explains how men attribute divine qualities to women that they cannot control. Through the contrast between the art of two distinct cultures, it can be assumed that the themes appearing in both cultures illustrate an inherent characteristic of humanity. Since the European culture of Heart of Darkness was not significantly altered by the African culture it subjugated, it can be safely compared to the non-subjugated African culture of Things Fall Apart.
