Essay / Improving a department - 724
As a new manager, I was required to change the environment of a department that is struggling to survive. The problems this department currently faces include an outdated product line, ineffective communication between departments, and fierce competition for business financing. These problems must be corrected for this department to survive. If this department cannot be straightened out, businesses will see it as a liability and will eventually find their own way to remedy the problem. I presented a plan to turn around this department and make positive changes that will result in a profitable department for the company. The first step is to meet with the company and discuss the overall goal of the company to ensure that changes to the department are aligned with the company's goals. Information from this meeting with the company will be communicated to my department leadership and we will use this information to develop new policies and procedures. This information will also be useful for developing new products and marketing campaigns. The new products will play a crucial role in the department's turnaround. Product development will not only show the company that our department can bring new ideas, but that it can also make money for the company. The goal of my plan is to make this department a profitable asset for the company, which will increase the department's funding, and this is the first step toward that goal. The department's senior leadership will hold meetings to brainstorm new policies and to decide which policies do not align with our ultimate goal so we can eliminate them. Our department will develop a mission statement to help guide decisions made and processes implemented. If a process does not align with our mission statement, it is useless and not worth pursuing. Employee feedback will be solicited in the form of employee opinion surveys, management will ask employees what changes they would like to see and what products and marketing ideas they think would be effective. By doing this we give employees a personal stake in what happens in our department, which will improve their engagement and pride in their work..
