Essay / Health Care: The Bismarck Method of Health Care
Health care is the maintenance or restoration of health through treatment provided by trained and licensed professionals (Webster). The American people have faced many problems related to the way the healthcare system is divided. There are currently four basic health care models used in the United States. First, PBS describes the Beveridge model, covered/managed by government, through the payment of taxes. This is the only model used in Britain, but in the United States it only covers veterans and soldiers. In Britain, everyone in the country is covered by this model. Another system model adopted by the United States is the Bismarck model, which helps people purchase their own health insurance through their employer (Healthcare Economist). The three main countries that use this model are Japan, Switzerland, and Germany, whose former leader, Chancellor Otto Von Bismarck, created the Bismarck Method of healthcare. Which not only covers 90% of the country, but also allows the rich to opt out of 10% (Reid and Palfreman). A third American model option takes the ideas of Beveridge and Bismarck and its name is National Health Insurance (NHI), with which Taiwan operates. The NHI allows private providers to become a choice even as citizens. These four systems have been used for decades, and President Obama has developed a bill proposing a change in the American health care system. The Affordable Care Act [Obamacare] will provide coverage through employers, help people find their own insurance or government coverage through Medicare for seniors and Medicaid for one-third of others (KFF). Medicaid is available to low-income people, but only states whose governors and legislators approve it actually benefit from KFF (Kaiser Family Foundation), explained.
