Talk shows are increasingly popular and widespread forms of entertainment, but the principle behind these shows, which was originally the idea of empowering individuals and allowing them to share their experiences, has been replaced by a focus on famous figures and largely insignificant issues of public interest. The Ellen Degeneres Show is a contemporary talk show that, while including therapeutic stories of disadvantaged individuals, including Ellen's own struggle with discrimination, primarily includes the disclosure of intimate details about the lives of celebrities. Through her use of humor to address more serious issues, Ellen provides social commentary that effectively reaches a wide audience and has the potential to spark debate on certain social issues. However, it has been suggested that talk shows, particularly that of Ellen Degeneres, do not bring about substantial political or social change due to their narrow focus on individual experience rather than the broader social issues that are the cause of this type of behavior. Therefore, although the Ellen Degeneres show may appear to rework society's dominant ideologies, which often discriminate against minorities such as gays and lesbians, this only distracts the audience from the fact that the show inadvertently reinforces these ideas through its target audience and the limited way in which these issues are handled. Conventional talk shows feature individuals who have experienced or experienced significant misfortune, discussing the impact an event had on their lives and beginning to overcome the traumatic experience.
