For the Benefit of the Many It was a cool, crisp October night and a family was returning home from a high school football game. The children were sitting in the back seat and playing quietly and the parents were having a pleasant conversation about the game. Suddenly the brakes screeched and the car stopped abruptly. What was this problem that almost caused an accident and could it have been avoided? This type of incident occurs throughout the United States and sometimes has a fatal outcome. Deer are the cause of this problem and wildlife conservation is one way to help prevent future accidents. Wildlife conservation uses many tools that benefit animals and humans. Hunting is a necessary tool for wildlife conservation and should be considered the most effective means of controlling and managing the deer population. The deer population has increased to levels that need to be controlled. As the deer population increases, so does the need for more habitat land to provide them with food and shelter. Healthy deer need more habitat land, but there is less and less land available. Forested areas and rural farmland, which currently provide habitat for deer, are disappearing as urban areas expand. Greater integration of people and deer can be expected as housing developments and urban expansion continue to move in and take over deer habitat. Car accidents with deer are the result of an overpopulation of deer stuck in a more restricted habitat, into which humans have also encroached. The cost of car and deer accidents costs people higher car insurance, taxes, and even some people's lives. Hunting is a way for people to help control the deer population effectively and give back to the community instead of taking from it. The increase in the deer population is having a negative impact on paper ......nses to a large-scale reduction of herds in a Georgia state park. " Natural Areas Journal 27.2 (2007), 161-168.
