Women face discrimination at the workplace. Discrimination is defined as a behavioral activity that manifests itself in the way people treat members of other groups and in the decisions they make regarding others. In Chapter 3 on race and ethnicity in the United States, we explain how discrimination affects not only corporate positions but also pay rates. Incomes are dramatically different between men and women and only get worse for minority women. These women have broken the glass ceiling of their companies. “In 1991, the Glass Ceiling Commission was created to help women and minorities combat their underrepresentation in the workplace.” With this article and ongoing research, women are beginning to break the glass ceiling that is holding them back. Women make up just 2.2% of CEO positions at Fortune 500 companies. This number is incredibly low: fewer than 15 companies have female CEOs among the 500 companies we examine that best fit our country's situation.
