Abortion is a global problem defined as the voluntary termination of a human pregnancy, most commonly within the first 28 weeks. This is controversial worldwide due to the different moral principles based on religion and ethics of humanity. (1) Currently, safe abortion is only offered in 60 countries around the world. Many religions believe that abortion is wrong and therefore never ethical. (2) Religions against abortion include Catholic Christians, Buddhists, and Hinduism. I chose this issue because I have a strong personal interest in medical ethics and have previously studied this specific subject in Religious Studies for GCSE. This topic falls into the category of medical ethics because it is a debate based on medicine. Abortion is a global problem because in some countries where abortion is illegal, such as Ireland, unsafe abortions are carried out illegally due to mothers who are desperate to receive this treatment for various valid reasons. Additionally, there are some countries where abortion is currently legal, but there are debates and protests to make it illegal. The first perspective is that abortion ends a human life and is therefore considered murder and therefore never ethical. The second is that abortion is ethical depending on the circumstances in which the woman finds herself. This is simply because they support the idea that a woman has the right to control her own body and that if she does not wish to be pregnant, she should have the right to abort if she wishes.
