  • Essay / The Benefits of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)

The first settler arrived in America seeking freedom and refuge from religious persecution in 1607. From there, Americans continued to fight for their independence from Britain until they succeeded in claiming it. in 1776. America became a land of opportunity, founded for liberty, and a place of refuge from poverty and persecution. How can a country forget its roots so quickly? The DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program has enabled thousands of young immigrants to realize their American dreams. Who are we to take that away from them? Dreamers are no different from our country's founding fathers; both want a better life. DACA provides countless opportunities for those seeking a second chance and should not be tampered with. Famous monuments, such as the Statue of Liberty, were built to commemorate and signify what America stands for. The Statue of Liberty stands tall and proud for all to see as her “beacon hand shines throughout the world” and her “silent lips” cry “give me… your huddled masses yearning to breathe free… I raise my lamp next to the golden door. (Source A, Lazarus) If DACA were eliminated, what message about America would it send? The time and dedication of our country's founders would be wasted. Immigrants come for a variety of reasons, such as religious freedom, escape from oppression, and/or better business opportunities; who are all striving to improve their lives and those of their children. Doesn’t that sound familiar? America is their refuge. Taking that away from them would be no different than taking a pacifier from a child. Why would anyone want to take something so beloved from someone so innocent? Monuments intended to represent America would no longer have their meaning and would become promises never kept. This “big old flag” waving its red, white and blue colors would remind people of the freedom they enjoy in America, but only if they can somehow get here in the first place. The Liberty Bell that rings freedom across America for all to hear would become nothing more than a huge, rusty bell. Maybe there's a reason it's cracked. Why have so many expectations that cannot be met? Revoking DACA would cheapen everything America stands for. The media has a great influence on the way people think. Television manipulates people's perceptions in comedic or romantic ways. For this reason, negative images of immigrants are presented in an underhanded way, without us even noticing. Mainstream media portrays immigrants as greedy, coming to America only to steal jobs and “marrying to get a green card.” (Source B, Perez-Zerb) Characters are developed based on stereotypes such as Latinas being maids or Asians being nerds who ironically know kung fu in times of distress. Not to mention the lack of adequate representation of people of color and common cases of whitewashing in Hollywood. Latinos had to create their own awards show, American Latino Media Arts (ALMA), to properly promote themselves. Even the so-called credible media that people start their morning with is biased. Never has a film won a Grammy Award about a young immigrant arriving legally in America.
