Everyone knows how dreary office life can be. Sitting there in your own little cubicle surrounded by walls, working at a desk twenty-four hours a day. Bleak indeed, and yet a scribal job could be considered ten times worse. Not only were they stuck in an office most of the day, but they were also responsible for handwriting and copying the necessary legal documents in excellent, error-free handwriting. In “Bartleby, The Scrivener,” the narrator is a lawyer who begins to tell the story of a most peculiar writer. Although the entire story centers on this strange scribe, Bartleby, the narrator, Lawyer, makes it a point to introduce two employees of his office: Turkey, Nippers. By introducing these three writers and their eccentricities and how the lawyer reacts to these eccentricities, it shows the lawyers their patience and conformity to these eccentric traits. This forced the reader to expect the lawyer to react to Bartleby the same way he reacted with Turkey and Nippers before Bartleby was even introduced, surprising the reader later in the story. The lawyer started with the introduction of Turkey. Turkey was an Englishman and a copyist. He was an excellent worker in the morning, but had a habit of drinking excessively at lunch every day. So naturally, once the clock strikes twelve, its effectiveness plummets. His temper flared randomly and he went through the rest of his day in a very bipolar manner, attributing his mistakes to his old age. The lawyer notices this eccentric habit and, although frustrated, he abandons it. The lawyer presented himself as a safe man, who naturally avoids confrontations and enjoys his peaceful life. So naturally, the lawyer can't be bothered to confront Turkey in the middle of a paper... patience and rationality to move past that and see them as the workers they are. So when the lawyer began to confront Bartleby, showing his frustration and anger to his other employees, going so far as to arrest Bartleby, the impressions were completely shattered. Overall, the lawyer was smart in introducing Turkey and Nippers first. He had pointed out how extraordinarily particular Bartleby the editor was and, to give a basis for comparison, he had first introduced Turkey and Nippers. To show readers that he was not originally an angry and energetic man. To show them that he didn't normally react the way he did to others like he did to Bartleby. To show that he was a calm man who avoided confrontation and knew how to rationalize, he introduced Turkey and Nippers. And in doing so, it gave the story being told more impact on the reader..
