We are all unique, but there are certain defining elements that determine our level in society. Differences in skin color are not the only cause of discrimination. Ideas and lifestyles change our level and how we are accepted by those who “rule.” Our disparate ideas on topics like family and love are a major source of hatred between cultures. Using symbolism and characterization, Carter explores views on family, discrimination, and the nature of a different culture in his novel The Education of the Little Tree. They believe in a strong family relationship, not just people living under the same roof. Grandpa said that before his time, “relatives” meant everyone you understood and had an understanding with, so it meant “loved people.” But people became selfish and reduced it to mere blood kinship; but in reality, it was never meant to mean that.
