    Is social media beneficial for teenagers? Over a billion people actively use social media, demonstrating its importance in today's society, with influence related. Social media is a form of communication through the Internet where society can share thoughts, information and messages. Before “snap chat” or “instant messaging”, social media did not exist. The Internet created in 1958, for the United States' Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), was to disseminate important military-related information across the country ("Internet Society"). Over the years, social media has become an essential part of teenagers' lives, used for interactive, informative and entertaining purposes. In the 21st century, the “age of technology”, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter rule the lives of teenagers as they take the form of a true friend. Although social media deteriorates social interactions, it has a positive impact on adolescents because it improves community, relationships and self-confidence. Through social media, teens have a role to play in the community and are able to promote organizations for publicity purposes. Teenagers appear to be more involved in politics according to CNET Senior Editor Terdiman. In 2012, the hot topic among teenagers was the presidential election. Teenagers realize that because they can't vote until they're 18, they don't have a real opinion on anything related to politics in a voting room. Many teenagers said: “If I have the right, I might as well use it” (Balkam). Teenagers want to be connected to their community in order to gain mutual understanding with their peers around the world, and Twitter and blogging have been the guide for many teens to express themselves freely. Without social media, teenagers cannot express their true feelings while promoting what is right. Teenagers are social promoters for many major companies and music groups. Without social media, there would be no real platform where voices could be heard, which would contradict “free speech”. Schools encourage enthusiastic behavior, but much of it comes from social media. If teenagers did not have the Internet, there would not be a huge technological boom or there would not be the same technology that society has today. Such statements can make a person think and start a chain reaction. The adolescent mind is developed in this mindset to start a chain reaction because a connection with a million people starts with one. Social media is really beneficial for teenagers because our world would not be connected without it.
