  • Essay / My dream of becoming a doctor - 945

To gain exposure and familiarity with the American medical system, I completed two months of clinical internship at Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York, working in the Department of Cardiology and Infectious Diseases. Working closely with the fellows helped me understand the logic of choosing certain treatment protocols over others. I started referring to scientific articles for each case and within a short time I realized my interest in research and to pursue this I took two months of research electives at Johns University Hopkins at the Center for Clinical Global Health Education in collaboration with Dr. Amita Gupta and her team on (a) residual respiratory impairment following pulmonary tuberculosis; and (b) the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance. Interested in research, during my fourth year I researched contraceptive knowledge among women of childbearing age and the prevalence of malnutrition among primary school children. I presented a poster of these results at the 2013 International Medical Students Conference and a publication appeared in New Indian. Journal of Surgery. Currently, I work as an observer at Johns Hopkins Hospital for Infectious Diseases.
