Essay / Review of Freakonomics - 1662
Review of FreakonomicsThe main idea of this chapter is that the study of economics is the study of incentives. We find a differentiation between economic incentives, social incentives and moral incentives. Incentives are amusingly described as "ways to get people to do more good things or fewer bad things," and in this chapter we find a few examples of them - Chicago Public Schools teachers, sumo in Japan, be careful. center in Israel and the bagel business by Paul Feldman – about how incentives motivate people and most of the time, conventional wisdom turns out to be “wrong” when incentives are in place. I completely agree with this, while reading this I was able to think of several examples that take place in the daily lives of Mexicans, and here is a clever explanation: police corruption. It's not that police officers are bad people or that they have no morals, it's that the monetary incentive is strong enough that they prefer to "cheat" and profit more from corruption than this. that they would earn with their monthly salary. In this discussion it is explained that incentives sometimes lead to cheating, because "something worth having is worth cheating on". I think that the incentives placed in daily life - those that we can control, say, in our business - should be established judiciously, in order...... middle of paper ...... different, the Children's names are predictors of their success/failure because of its connection to one's parents and the cycle that names make through low to high socioeconomic classes. All of these trends brought up by economic analysis become interesting especially when supported by statistical data – but they are also examined by cause/effect, such as the question that arises: is black culture simply a reflection of the divide economic relationship between whites and blacks or has it been modified? did this cause a rift between them? From my point of view, these results are surprising and hard to believe, but they make sense. However, I think the author is getting radical about this - about an article he posted on his website's blog about the middle name Wayne characterizing criminals. I suppose we can find a lot of strange coincidences, but it's important to determine the causes, if there are any consistent ones..
