There were large fires, gunshots ringing out everywhere, and a general sense of death that surrounded the raid (p. 229). Unfortunately, like her father, Eunice was kidnapped during the Deerfield Raid. However, unlike him, she remained with her captors and eventually integrated into their culture and customs, going so far as to "[forget] how to speak English, [convert] to Catholicism, and [marry] a Mohawk (p. 221). . Eunice was taken by a woman from the Mohawk tribe who had come to Deerfield looking for a child to replace the child she had lost. Essentially, a war broke out because many Mohawks were looking for a new replacement for the people they had lost to "untimely death" (p. 223). Because it is a practice that is part of Mohawk customs and culture, it may explain why the Mohawk natives attacked Deerfield and, further, "it explains why so many captives who remained in New France remained with the Mohawks” (p. 223). Perhaps this is why Eunice was treated well by her mistress. If the Mohawks were looking for replacements, they probably would have treated their captives with more respect.
