    In the text, we see Julie's mother struggle to give Julie physical love, such as hugging her or letting her sleep in her bed, while Debbie, for her part, allows Julie to feel loved. In the text on page 18, from line 27 to line 34, we hear about how Julie felt helpless at home: "Julie was entangled with Debbie, and they were like two cats who ended up to wash and fall asleep, and Julie She knew how deprived of life at home she had been and how empty and sad her parents were…” Julie wants to be held and to feel loved. She thinks her parents are sad; they don't really touch each other or express love for anyone, including Julie. I'm sure Julie's mother loves him, but she doesn't show it and has trouble expressing it properly. It seems like Julie's mother is having a hard time understanding Julie, and she can't deal with it.
