  • Essay / Gatto is against school: how public education paralyzes...

There were always those few students who knew what they wanted to do as a career. Counselors could have helped conduct career tests with students to help them understand how and where they should go for further education. As a first-generation college student, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. I knew absolutely nothing about college and my mother did her best to go to meetings and gather as much information as she could get about tests, ACT scores, applications, scholarships, and the FAFSA. My experience in public high school taught us very little on this subject, I had no indication of what I should do after completing my twelve years. I never got an answer when someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up.
