Effectively applying the 9-step model shows the flaws USAuto made in its initial attempt at problem solving. We also discuss the challenges USAuto faced while trading with AutoMex and what to avoid to overcome these challenges. Finally, we cover the application of the 9-step model in real-world situations and compare it with events experienced by team members at work. Effectiveness of the 9 Step Problem Solving Model Before studying the 9 Step Problem Solving Model, we first thought that USAuto had done extensive research to solve their problem. After reviewing and applying the 9-Step Problem Solving Model to this scenario, we learned that there were many gaps in the approach to problem research and resolution carried out by USAuto. By applying the 9-step problem solving model, we learned how to analyze and formulate the right problem, identify a relevant problem statement, retrieve ideas from generic benchmarking techniques, and implement a set of viable solutions. Our learning team realized that proper analysis, and correctly formulating the problem, forms the basis of the model. Without a proper initial analysis of the problem, implementing an effective solution is impossible. We found that the first step of the model was most effective when we identified the facts without trying to reach a solution in a group atmosphere. Due to the different perspectives of different team members, the team identified different aspects of the problem, which then helped identify alternative solutions to the problem. A few different approaches our team considered for the negotiation process include properly establishing a relationship with AutoMex (by learning more about the company and employees) and bringing in a male representative from the Spanish-speaking company to conduct negotiations..
