Between 1865 and 1920, industrialization brought significant changes to the lives of many people. First, the development of a new railroad system helped settle the West and make it more accessible to people. Second, big city transit systems provided an outlet for congested cities. Finally, the discovery of a method of transmitting electricity has helped to illuminate our daily lives. I think these are three of the most important changes that industrialization brought about in people's lives. First, the building of railroads in the West played a huge role in the successful expansion of our country and the realization of American dreams. Before the development of a more efficient rail system, the movement of people and goods was relatively slow, difficult and expensive. Due to the different gauges of the rails, goods sometimes had to be unloaded and then reloaded onto covered wagons. Second, most goods had to be produced and supplied locally on a small scale. As a result, product prices were very high. Nonetheless, with federal grants, railroad developers were able to build a more efficient rail system that would connect the settled East with the unsettled West. After the new railway system was completed, farmers were within a reasonable distance of railway depots, which meant that manufacturers could locate their factories anywhere and be able to import raw materials and send their products wherever they could find customers.
