  • Essay / The Impact on Arthritis in Canada - 3388

IntroductionWhat is arthritis? Arthritis is inflammation of a joint leading to symptoms such as chronic joint pain, stiffness and swelling. The Arthritis Society says that approximately 4.6 million Canadians currently have arthritis. by 2036, this number will increase to 7.5 million (1 in 5). Health care costs and lost productivity total $33 billion; by 2031, this figure is expected to double. (The Arthritis Society, 2014). According to Aging in Contemporary Canada, arthritis and rheumatism are the most common chronic health problem among Canadian seniors, affecting 47% of people. (Chappell, McDonald and Stones, 2008, p. 221). With more than 100 types of arthritis ranging from mild to severe, the most common age-related form is osteoarthritis (OA), which affects 1 in 10 Canadians. Approximately 13% of Canadians have osteoarthritis. Joint damage due to osteoarthritis accounts for 80% of hip replacements and more than 90% of knee replacements. (The Arthritis Society, 2014). Severe cases of osteoarthritis can restrict the ability to participate in activities and, therefore, affect a person's quality of life. Currently, there is no cure for osteoarthritis without joint replacement. Although osteoarthritis can affect all ages, the purpose of this article is to focus on the impact of this disorder on daily activities and functioning in the aging population. The discussion will also highlight the origin and manifestations of this disorder and review current and future treatment options available.OriginOA is a degenerative joint disorder that affects both men and women over the age of 60 . In an osteoarthritic joint, the cartilage between the two bones becomes thin and damaged. leading to narrowing of the joint space and friction of the bones causing destruction.
