Essay / The Charge - 676
PrologueThis short story recounts the impressions of a soldier just before he is thrown into the hell of battle. The date of the battle is of no importance. These thoughts have undoubtedly been passed down through eons of human history. From the caveman to the space stations of tomorrow, these thoughts will remain eternal. ***** The face of war never changes. The men converge towards diametrically opposite edges of a field. Whether it's corn, wheat, or just a meadow covered in wildflowers, the arena never matters. The men on each shoulder of the field required the charge. The leaders decided that the land should be acquired. The question that constantly comes to mind is why. I have fought many times and have never seen victorious armies inhabit the conquered field. I have never seen the benefit from bloodshed. The only resource needed to launch a charge in combat is the heart. If a man has no heart, the office is not in him. Many say that courage is what you need, but that is not the case. You can have the courage of a Leo, but if you lack heart, the courage will dry up, the heart is eternal. The men around me that I know have heart, and for that I thank the Almighty. I won't have to look for them, because they will be by my side when the time comes. These men have shown their hearts in many confrontations that I am wary of them now. We were told only a few of us would return, but with one requirement understood. To charge an enemy, you feel from the start that you will not survive. This is not the question that will remain once everything is done. They will only ask: “Is he really dead?” ". I see the sun rising. The time is near for us to do our duty. “Duty for the homeland, duty for the flag, but above all duty towards our comrades”, such is the soldier’s motto. The man next to you is your country, your flag and your brother. We all know that this day is a challenge for our friendship. There are times when I think I might turn to cowardice, but then I look at my friends and I know that can't be the case. I still am, always have been and always will be, because humanity needs me. The captain just called and we're all here like we always were..
