  • Essay / Reasons why vinyl is still popular - 1811

    Over the years, music has changed dramatically, especially the medium on which it is recorded and distributed. Different formats emerged over time, and the greatest advent was first the vinyl record. Later came the digital revolution, starting with the CD and now with digital downloads. Based on what has been demonstrated in the industry, convenience appears to be the winning factor in what determines the mainstream format: digital. However, does this necessitate digital being the best way forward? In reality, this is not the case. Many enthusiasts take the other side of the old format, the vinyl record, fond of its aesthetic and musical qualities which seem to be lacking in digital. This has sparked a major vinyl comeback in recent years. A major breakthrough in the way people listen to music occurred in the early 1980s, when Sony introduced its compact audio disc. This new digital audio format had an exceptional advantage: it forever changed the way we listen to music: music was now portable. An analogy that compares digital to the old analog format is that it's like claiming that cars are better than trains: they both get you where you need to go, but one is simply more popular than the 'other. Unless you're the type of person who needs a tangible experience with your music, you'll go digital, and that's how most people are.
