Essay / Animal testing should be banned - 663
Animal testing for human safety is inhumane and should be banned. Beloved pets such as rodents, rabbits and even dogs are tested all over the world. These helpless and voiceless animals are intentionally given terrible diseases to find cures, while scientists could find other ways to test instead of using our four-legged friends. Additionally, the tests are not accurate because some products cause cancer in animals but also cure human diseases. Why are humans allowed to commit such inhumane acts, when they have given humans the power to mercilessly torture weak animals? Rodents and rabbits have become scientists' animals of choice for testing because they are the few remaining ethical animals on which to conduct tests. These scientists integrate diseases in animals, such as AIDS and cancer, where the animal suffers the agony of the disease. These animals suffer from the pain caused by these diseases, so it is necessary to test whether a specific medication works. The drug may work but may also contain side effects that are fatal to the test subject (Choose cruelty free n.d.). Michael Leavitt, former Secretary of Health and Human Services for the United States Food and Drug Administration, states that 90% of trails fail, so 1 in 10 trails are successful (BUAV nd). While this is just one example of the pain these creatures experience, there are several others, such as: spraying the animal with toxins to observe how long it takes to die and testing the animals for cosmetic research purposes (Choose Without Cruelty nd). Furthermore, after all these painful tests, the animals are then slaughtered. This is why animal torture must stop! Testing on animals can be approached in other ways with...... middle of paper ...... hopefully finding a cure, once these tests are completed they are killed. Using animals that are not the same genotype as humans results in inaccurate test results, as if products are useful to humans but animals and vice versa. This inhumane torture must stop.
