Essay / Iron Man 3 Co-Production - 726
As the most acclaimed and successful Sino-American co-production in cinema history, Iron Man 3 has proven to be a benchmark in international co-production. Singaporean producers can learn some lessons from this collaboration. The Walt Disney Co.'s China division and Marvel Studios chose to partner with Beijing-based DMG Entertainment because the latter has a close working relationship with the state-run China Film Group. . In doing so, producers were able to circumvent China's rigid foreign film quota system of 34 films per year. This quota will be increased to 44 films in the coming years and this is good news for budding filmmakers in Singapore who are considering a joint venture with China. By partnering with a Chinese company, the Singaporean producer will gain a place in the quota, as state media will consider the co-production as a domestic film and not a 100% foreign film. Dan Mintz, CEO of DMG Entertainment, talked about the term "narrow focus" in one of his interviews with The Hollywood Reporter. We speak of “narrow focus” when a foreign studio or producer is only concerned with distributing their film in China and not collaborating with China. Unfortunately, the China Film Group controls every aspect of distribution: how much you can market, which films you compete with, and how long you stay there. They therefore see no need to grant access to your film when you are only aiming for box office sales. Ultimately, China wants its industry to grow. They want to provide the competent personnel to create films that are partly theirs, which they can still qualify as a national film and reap results at the domestic box office. China needs a mutually beneficial relationship with foreign producers. This is...... middle of paper...... in terms of broadening our knowledge of co-production and allowing us to have more information about filmmaking in China and with the China. The latest feature film co-production between Singapore and China is called Meeting The Giant. It is a co-production between Clover Films of Singapore, G&J Creation, Golden Village Pictures (distribution) and Stellar Mega Films of China (distribution). Stellar Mega Films is one of the top five film distributors in China, alongside giants like Huaxia, China Film Group and BONA Film Group. This film is the first Singapore-China co-production to be released theatrically in both countries. This marks a very bright future for feature films co-produced by Singapore and China, as we have found a strong collaborator and China has gained a strong partner who can actually produce a Chinese script and understand the Asian market as well as the Chinese..
