How Exercise Helps You Live Longer “Live Long and Thrive” This popular quote is an example of taking hand of your life and prosperity in good health. You have the opportunity to extend your life by exercising. Sitting and lying on the couch all day will not improve your health. Most video games will also contribute to lack of activity. Physical exercise can benefit you in many ways. For example, exercise can prevent obesity, improve heart health, make you stronger, and more. If you can exercise, you will be happy with the results, such as good health and strength. Exercise improves your quality of life. Exercise does many wonders for you, such as preventing obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Exercising can hide this from you. It also keeps you strong and fit, which will help prevent injuries. Exercise can also prevent certain disabilities. Some examples are falls, frailty and many more. When you exercise regularly, you sleep better, which is good for you. All of these things lead to a longer life. How do these things help you live longer? Many people are disabled because they have weak bones or suffer from debilitating pain from arthritis, but exercise can prevent this. “Exercise reduced disability in people at all levels; men and women, normal weight and obese people, and people over 70 years of age” (Harvard Health Letter, 1997).
