Essay / Becoming an Effective Global Citizen - 991
The reason why I would like to go to Japan as a participant in the JET program as an ALT is due to the fact that in addition to stating the direct objectives of assistant language teachers, JET explicitly states that it is seeking members to become "cultural ambassadors to Japan." In our increasingly globalized society, the concept of intersectionality is integral to becoming an effective global citizen. At university, I was able to research inclusive feminism, the need for multiculturalism in a world that is both globalized and xenophobic, and the responsibility people have to bridge gaps between all cultures by appreciating differences , rather than erasing them. After discussing the program with friends and colleagues who were former JET program participants, it is evident that JET not only provides opportunities for international citizens to participate in cultural exchanges, but encourages and enables them to integrate into the community and create opportunities. for themselves. The fact that this is a teaching opportunity is very exciting because I have wanted to become an educator since I was in preschool. As such, the majority of my volunteer and work experience has been geared toward teaching. The most relevant experience I have had in terms of English as a foreign language is as an ELL teaching assistant. My school is the ELL hub of Roanoke City, and our school is by far the most diverse in the district. We had refugees and immigrants from all over the world, and because the school is also Title I, teachers could not provide all services and individualized attention to students whose English skills were below grade level. Midway through the year, my role shifted from assisting in the classroom to sharing Japanese culture beyond music and pop culture. I aspire to become a member of the JET program because I do not yet have the cultural knowledge or language skills required to effectively participate in this cultural exchange. My goal in becoming a member of the JET program would be to better understand Japanese culture in order to facilitate cultural sharing between it and black culture by becoming a member of a Japanese community, and to better learn the language to be able to communicate effectively with those who surround me. I believe this cross-cultural collaboration can produce something unique, challenging and powerful. The results could show that cultural differences can complement each other in ways that are not diminished by the uniqueness of one or the other, and can coexist without having to erase any part of anyone's identity..
