In his publication “Ethics and Genetically Modified Foods,” Gary Comstock discusses the ethical pros and cons of producing genetically modified organisms. A GMO is formed by a laboratory process that takes genes from the genome of one species and implants them into the genome of another. This practice has become widely controversial and the use of GMOs or transgenic crops has many advantages and disadvantages. Theology plays a major role in humans' reluctance toward GMOs, as they believe that engaging in biotechnology is like playing God. Comstock argues that God and religion are subject to interpretation and that curiosity is part of our nature, which is theologically acceptable. I believe, however, that the scientific process of genetic modification should not be dictated by religion at all. Another disadvantage listed by Comstock is that GMOs can have a disastrous effect on animals, ecosystems and humans. GMO technology is constantly evolving and the introduction of large-scale agriculture into the environment is recent. So there's still a lot we don't know.....
