Essay / Chinese Culture versus Western and American Culture
Chinese Culture versus Western and American CultureThere are many different aspects of ancient Chinese culture that differ from Western and American culture. Many elements such as education, marriage and type of community may be different from what we have in our western civilization. Although Chinese culture has evolved over many years, some ancient traditions are still preserved. There are a wide variety of differences between the art and literature forms of Chinese and Western cultures. An example of this is the importance of architecture in China. While the Chinese build large, extravagant buildings, the history of the architecture and the buildings themselves are of relatively little importance to them. It is difficult to find ancient buildings in China or even know if their current architectural forms are similar to their ancient ones due to the lack of records preserved in anything other than paintings. “The Chinese have no respect for buildings. When they fall or are destroyed, the local inhabitants swarm in like ants and carry away everything that could be used for the needs of life” (Speiser 17). So, while the Chinese lack a method of preserving buildings, or rather find it unimportant, Western and American culture greatly respects the art of architecture. When New York's Twin Towers were destroyed in 2001, it was truly devastated. Devastation so enormous that buildings are being remodeled and rebuilt to form a museum in memory of the lives lost and the importance of the building itself. The Chinese would never have dreamed of doing such a thing; they simply picked up the usable parts and moved on.
