    What is racism? The definition given by the Merriam Webster dictionary is "a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and abilities and that racial difference produces an inherent superiority of a particular race." From the definition alone we can see that racism and prejudice are horrible, incorrect errors in a person's thinking and that no one would, or should, be proud to admit to having such feelings. Is it true, however, that race or prejudice is not considered at all by those people who claim not to be prejudiced against those of another race or group? A person may show signs of modern racism in which they outwardly appear and act as if they are an unprejudiced person, while internally holding negative attitudes. Is there a way to really know if a person is experiencing these types of feelings? This is one of the ideas behind testing for implicit associations. The purpose of creating the Implicit Associations Test was to discover if there is a way to determine whether it is possible to truly know a person's inner feelings, but that they may not be known. able or willing to make a report. It can also be a way for someone to determine whether their explicit attitudes match their implicit attitudes and to be able to know themselves a little better than before. Before taking the tests, I decided which four tests seemed most relevant to me. I chose one based on my religious preferences because I consider myself a religious person and have respect and interest in religious teachings. Two of the tests I chose were based on the fact that I was, ever so slightly, part of this race; The Asian and Native American IAT. If a person has an explicit negative view towards a group or a specific group has prejudicial feelings, it is more than likely that their implicit attitude is also the same. In turn, a person holding these views would have a biased opinion against such a group or person and would discriminate against a person in said group for no other reason than that they She's part of the group. Taking an implicit association test might not be something we would do. want to base any serious decision on; it is a useful tool for knowing yourself better. By realizing that we may unconsciously hold opinions that we are not proud of, we can inoculate ourselves and bring about personal change for the better.
