Essay / Plot Summary of Remember the Titans - 1253
Remember the Titans is a 2000 film presenting the true story of a racially divided football team from the 1970s. The film highlights the relationships between the Blacks and whites and how they learned to interact with each other at a time when that was not the way of life. It raises a number of questions throughout, about what's right and what's wrong, and really challenges the characters, making it a very interesting film to watch. I have seen this film several times and each time I feel like I get something new out of it. This is a film that can be used as an educational tool, it does a great job of interpreting not only what was happening in the United States of America at that time but also the concepts of social psychology through real life situations. While watching this film, I noticed many social psychology concepts throughout. I had never paid attention to these concepts while watching the film before, so it was interesting to pay close attention and see how many concepts came up. The film features the foot-in-the-door technique, social facilitation, de-individualization, ingroup, scapegoat theory, among others. Being a very real and honest film, it's easy to see why so many social psychology concepts are present. Our textbook defines social psychology as “the scientific field that seeks to understand the nature and causes of individual behavior, feelings, and thinking in a social situation” (Baron & Branscombe, 2012). There are many strong characters in the film, and they display these concepts. Although there were many concepts present in the film, I chose to focus on two that I thought were the most important. The first is the realistic conflict theory. Our textbook defines this as "the view that prejudice... middle of paper ... relationships between blacks and whites, and how they learned to interact with each other at a time when it was not the case”. the way of life. It shows a team putting a dent in a major problem in the United States at that time. Through their leadership, they were able to break a common thought and like I said before, it's truly inspiring to watch. As Coach Boone said, “Make sure they always remember the night they played the Titans” (Moviequotes.com)” Works Cited Baron, R.A. & Branscombe, NR (2012). Social Psychology (13th ed.).
