    Have you ever stopped and wondered what people wore back then? Or what clothes looked like when the Romans or Greeks were here? The clothes we wear today are very different; people didn't always wear skinny jeans and graphic shirts. I took the time to research what clothes looked like before we were born. It was thought that the very first people, Homo sapiens, might have been the first to wear clothes. Early people may have worn leaves or animal skins. Adam and Eve (according to the Bible) made aprons of leaves to cover themselves. The first civilization in Mesopotamia was Sumerian. During the early years of the Sumerian era, men wore a small loincloth with a string at the waist to be able to keep the waist up. It covered almost nothing. Later, they began to wear knee-length or lower skirts. The skirt would be held together by a thick rope belt that would be tied in the back. They were decorated with fringe, a string like fabric, or cut pieces of fabric into the shape of pedals. Women would wear a Shaw. A Shaw is a piece of cloth worn around the shoulders, or a scarf. Towards the end of Sumerian rule, both men and women wore skirts and shawls. This was around 2000 BC. In ancient Egypt (3100 BC-1 BC), the most common textile was linen. This helped people feel more comfortable in the heat. Wools were known, but they were considered impure. The rich were the only ones to wear animal fibers. They wore cloaks, they were forbidden in temples and Sanctuaries (holy place in a temple). The pharaohs wore leopard skins on their shoulders, put the tail on their belt and hung themselves. Men wore skirts known as Shendyt.
