Shelley's use of recurring pathetic errors throughout the short story, such as "devouring darkness covers the approaching sun" and "a black and comfortless sky" evoke all a darkness of feeling. The repeated use of the color "black" gives a colorful connotation of isolation and emptiness that can exist in both nature and feelings. Shelley's use of the domestic family setting is used to exaggerate the deliberate voluntary exclusion chosen by the character Frankenstein as his return home is followed by his fathers who question why he chooses "to avoid society.” From this secondary dialogue we can infer that Frankenstein is a stranger even in his family setting where he should feel most comfortable and welcomed, because he is not in the company of strangers who do not understand him or don't know it. Yet Shelley may have deliberately done this to establish in the reader's mind the idea that Frankenstein himself feels misunderstood by those like his family who have known him since his birth. Additionally, other readers may propose the idea that friends such as Henry Clerval are important characters in the story and offer the interpretation that Frankenstein emerged from isolation through his friendships: "The study m 'had previously isolated sexual relations with my peers, and
