Alzheimer's disease is named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer. The disease appears for the first time around the age of sixty. Studies have concluded that up to 5.1 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer's disease. A person with Alzheimer's disease loses connections between neurons in the brain (1). Scientists are not sure what causes Alzheimer's disease, but scientists say the disease develops in a complex series of events that occur in the brain over a long period of time (3). Alzheimer's disease is known to cause dementia in older people. Dementia is the loss of thinking, memory and reasoning. Dementia affects life and daily activities, just like Alzheimer's disease (“Alzheimer's Disease Fact Sheet”1). Alzheimer's disease is not a normal part of aging and is not hereditary (Hyde 57). There are three different cases of Alzheimer's disease. The first case is known as the mild case of Alzheimer's. The mild case starts by taking more time to complete daily activities. A person with the condition may then develop poor judgment, different personalities and ask repetitive questions. People also tend to get lost and have problems with money or bills. The next case is the modern case, which corresponds to the second stage of Alzheimer's disease. The modern case consists of hallucinations, delusions and paranoia. One can behave impulsively in the modern case of Alzheimer's disease. The carnage of this disease consists of damage to the brain that controls language, reasoning, sensory processing and thinking. People have memory loss and their confusion will increase during the modern case of Alzheimer's disease.
