  • Essay / Viscosity Testing - 565

What factors affect the viscosity of a fluid? Research question: How does the temperature of corn syrup affect the viscosity of the fluid? Research hypothesis: Increasing the temperature of corn syrup decreases its viscosity. Independent variable: The viscosity of corn syrup, measured in seconds required for an iron ball to descend into the fluid. Dependent variable: The temperature of corn syrup in degrees (Celsius). Variables controlled:• Volume of corn syrup used in each of the experimental tests.• Temperature of the containers used.• Volume of the iron ball used.• Reliability of the thermometer used in the tests.• Volume of the container used.• Parameters used and reliability of the stopwatch.Control variables:The thermometer, containers and iron ball have been protected from any possible contaminants. The stopwatch has been calibrated and verified to correctly measure time in seconds and milliseconds, compared to other stopwatches. The thermometer has been verified to accurately measure the temperature of lukewarm water, and has been al...
