Essay / A reflection of my experience riding the Tower of Terror at Disney Land
The memory of fear that sticks out the most to me is the first time I rode the Tower of Terror. Disney Land is the happiest place on Earth to me. It offers many fun rides and roller coasters. This was my fourth time at Disney Land. For as long as I can remember, my sister kept talking about this ride called The Tower of Terror, and how much fun it was. I was very excited to ride it because on previous visits I wasn't big enough, I was too young and I wasn't brave enough. I was eight years old and ready to ride the Tower of Terror. The interior of the building looks creepy and dusty, with peeling wallpaper and cobwebs. It smelled musty, it was scary. The employees guided us throughout the hotel and made jokes about elevators and falls. The employees wore old-fashioned hunter suits with white gloves. The employees looked cold and dead with the makeup they wore. Everything they did and said was slow, it made me anxious. The queue takes you through the hotel where there are old and dusty paintings. We enter this small room where a video about the Twilight Zone is playing. After the video is over, we go through it and go up several floors to the boiler room. The boiler room is where the musty smell hits you the hardest. When you get to the top of the stairs there are three elevators where people are queuing behind the doors and right above them is a very old elevator indicator where you can see what floor people are on who travel. I heard screams that made me nervous about making the trip. The whole time my dad, sister and I were waiting in line, my sister was talking about how the ride drops you in the air and picks you up at the very top of the building where you can look out over the park in the dark absolute. I wasn't very excited for this part, I almost wanted to skip the ride. As we were about to get on the ride, I saw the people in front of us walking out, looking both disheveled and ecstatic, which made me excited to ride the ride and at the same time frightened just by seeing the faces of the previous ones. When we finally got on the ride we were let into the elevator, sat down, strapped in and held tight. They watch this scary little intro video about how we were in the same elevator that people died in. Then they drop us off but not very far just a little drop and all the lights are off so you can't see my heart is racing, I can feel it. Next thing we know she was falling again and again, I started screaming as loud as I could. Next thing we know we're heading straight for a few quick flashes and then dropping back down. We stopped abruptly and I had finally stopped screaming and thought we were done, no we were taken back to the top and fell back down. Eventually we stop and the voice returns to warn us that next time, beware of a haunted elevator. I felt like I was invincible after surviving the Tower of Terror.
