Essay / Using Chewing Gum to Reduce Paralytic Ileus gastrointestinal tract, thereby blocking normal flow. of the ingested material. The gastrointestinal tract is composed of involuntary smooth muscles that are under hormonal and neuronal control of the body. As a result, the flow of materials through the gastrointestinal tract cannot be controlled voluntarily. According to statistical reports from the United States of America, a significant number of American citizens are affected by gastrointestinal obstruction at some point in their lives. However, the actual cause of the obstruction varies from case to case. According to medical professionals, the degree to which the obstruction is considered life-threatening depends on the case of obstruction itself. Paralytic ileus arises from various causes which can be classified into two broad groups, namely mechanical obstruction and dysfunction of the gastrointestinal excretion process. Based on gastrointestinal dysfunction, causes of paralytic ileus include surgery, reduction of gastrointestinal electrolytes such as potassium, gastrointestinal infections, use of certain prescribed medications, and complications in gastrointestinal blood flow, to name a few. Mechanical obstruction occurs due to the growth of tumors in the gastrointestinal tract, gallstones, ingested indigestible materials, and adhesive tissues on the tract, especially after surgery, among others. Patients affected by gastrointestinal obstruction experience a number of symptoms such as constipation, abdominal discomfort, gastrointestinal cramps, foul odor in the chest...... middle of paper ...... and matter in the tract. Conversely, suppression of endocrine and other physiological functions of the body can result in paralytic ileus. Various strategies and techniques have been adopted to reduce the occurrence of paralytic ileus. These techniques involve the use of therapeutic techniques that encompass the administration of drugs and the adoption of enteral feeding. Nevertheless, chewing gum has been proposed and recommended in the reduction of paralytic ileus for various reasons. Using chewing gum provides results comparable to other forms of medication.
