  • Essay / Native American History and Resettlement - 2304

    1. Trace the history of resettlement and Indian reservations. In what ways did reservations destroy Native American cultures and in what ways did reservations foster tribal identities? Be sure to consider patterns of change and consistency over time. When you hear the word “offshoring,” I guess they're thinking of taking something exactly as it was and putting it in a different location, but putting it as is and with the same resources. Resettlement is a loaded term because before the word resettlement appeared, settlers in early America were forcefully pushing indigenous peoples from their homelands; they just didn't have the term "resettlement." In 1838, Mireau B. Lamar, President of the Republic of Texas, “initiated a policy of ethnic cleansing to remove all Indians from Texas”1 (p. 337). “Ethnic cleansing” is a pretty extreme way of talking about resettlement, but that's exactly the idea they were implementing. The evolution of words is constant, as familiar ideas and policies take on new identities through the adoption of words. This is important to take into consideration because throughout America's history and its relationship with the Indian peoples, many policies and programs have been recycled under a different name, without ever truly moving away from the main objective. The United States crafted these words to mask additional harm to Indians, which depended on public perception, but generally without any consideration for the people it would affect. The first big step towards the concept of “offshoring” was a primitive notion. He did not take into account where the Indians were going, but simply that they would find out for themselves. The first examples of this: the Treaty of...... middle of paper...... perpetual use, and it is our right to retain ownership.'17 (p. 498). The underlying theme is that through the hardships and adversity imposed on the Indians, they find a way, through the triumph of the human spirit and one's own agency, to emerge with their tribal identities intact, but who is revered as a source of inspiration for all people who fight against injustices and discrimination to endure. and advance equality. I believe that there is so much to learn from Indian history and that it can serve as a model for the future of people of different cultures because we can now look at the injustices that have been committed against this group of people . and how we, as people of the world, can avoid repeating these kinds of practices.
