Essay / Mary Reilly: A Medical Thriller in Disguise - 1016
Before leaving, she decides to visit her aster one more time. Much to the reader's shock, Hyde attacks Mary and attempts to slit her throat, although he ultimately fails to kill her. He reveals that he mixed poison with his antidote and injects it. He finally becomes Jekyll again and breathes his last in Mary's arms. The characters Mary and Stevenson make this novel terrifying and mysterious. Mary represents a character who demonstrates kindness, while Dr. Jekyll is a character who completely contrasts this kindness. As the Medina County District Library says, "Mary represents the pinnacle of devotion, kindness and honesty, in contrast to the dual nature and complexity of Dr. Jekyll, whose dark side threatens to destroy all bounds of decency, law and order. "Martin finds that Edward Hyde is an evil person and that the duality of Jekyll and Hyde is a normal thing that could happen to any human. As she states in one of her novels: "You want to surprise and upset your readers, but at the same time you want to entertain and attract them.”
