  • Essay / The Importance of Language Skills - 1836

I grew up in a Hispanic family where my parents spoke to me in Spanish. During my early years of life, I never had the opportunity to speak English because my parents did not understand the language. Although many children are capable of learning more than one language at the same time, learning English was quite difficult for me. I have always been exposed to the Spanish language. My mother always sang to me and always read to me in Spanish. Little by little, I began to speak Spanish perfectly. Until I came to kindergarten, I started to learn English. My teachers always communicated with me in English. In order to develop my English vocabulary since I could not practice my English at home, my teachers would often read English books to me or sing English songs so that I could begin to develop my vocabulary and identify objects. After five years, I could identify basic colors like purple, red, and black and sing “The wheels on the bus are going round and round.” My mother told me that when I was in preschool, I always read and sang the songs I learned in preschool.
