The conflict perspective, in itself, focuses on the ruling class and the governed class. From this perspective, the ruling class defines what is deviant based on how it helps them. In this case, the ruling class would be defined as upper class and white. The governed class would be defined as lower class and black. This is illustrated by the emphasis on the impact of the differences between the raped woman and the young men accused of raping her. The woman who was raped was a wealthy white businesswoman who worked as an investment banker on Wall Street. The young men who raped her were lower class, black, and from Harlem. Because of these extreme differences, there has been immense media attention. The media was often biased and viewed young men as criminals and animals in order to make them social outcasts. The media and the upper classes wanted to make an example of it to strengthen the laws and further separate the two groups. Additionally, the court system asked the woman to testify even though she did not remember anything that happened that night. The documentary stated that his testimony was simply used to "deliver an emotional punch" and make the young men seem even more inhumane. Ultimately, when the men were exonerated, there was almost no media coverage. The purpose of the news was no longer to show the lower classes where they belonged. Nothing
